How long has the school been running?
Since 1980, when ATF formed a partnership with the International Association of Arson Investigators to create and run this program. The partnership extends to utilizing teaching facilities at The National Center for Explosives Training and Research (NCETR) in Huntsville, Alabama.

What are the eligibility requirements for the program?

What's the best way to get to Huntsville, Alabama?
Huntsville, Alabama has a small airport that has numerous flights daily. Students may also fly into the airports in Nashville, Tennessee or Birmingham, Alabama. Both of these airports are approximately 80 miles away from Huntsville.

What is the dress code for the week?
For the majority of the week the dress code is business casual. You should, however, bring dress-down clothing for the exercises we do at NCETR. You do not require full fire scene equipment for these exercises. Please do your own research on the weather conditions anticipated for the week of the program ( If rain is anticipated, bring appropriate clothing.

Can I take photographs at NCETR?
You cannot take photographs outside the main entrance gate to the Academy. You can, however, take photographs relating to our teaching programs. Your instructors will provide you guidance on this but bring your cameras and video-recorders.

Will there be opportunities to buy souvenirs while at NCETR?
Unless they are current or former military they won’t be able to shop at the base PX or commissary. We do not have a shop here like FLETC that allows for the purchase of ATF materials. Yes. You will have some free time while on base to attend the base store.

Are meals provided as part of the course?
No. You are on your own for meals.

Where do we eat in the area?
There are fast food places on base, a pizza buffet at the bowling alley and a one man BBQ stand by the commissary. I can get you a list of local restaurants to give out to the students. We can talk about logistics for lunch. A lot of times we have students bring their lunch with them to save on time – so they can get out earlier. There is a cafeteria on the base for lunch or there are eating facilities appended to the Embassy Suites.

What free time might I have?
The space center is a big attraction and worth checking out while the students are here. If they come in early or stay later on Friday before traveling out.

Your classes will start at 8 a.m. on Monday morning at NCETR. On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday your classes will end at 5 p.m. On Wednesday evening you can expect to be in class until 10 p.m. The class will end at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Do I need to bring a laptop?
For most classroom sessions—"Yes". Students handout materials are given on a thumb drive and students have found good usage of laptop computers as we move into the practical exercise. If you wish to bring your laptop for that part of the program you are free to do so.

What educational credits do I get for attending this program?
We consider this to be a 'tested' program as a result of the manner in which we supervise, observe and instruct our classes. There are group presentations that form part of our instructor evaluation. Subject to the grading of the instructors, certificates representing 41 tested hours will be granted upon successful completion of the program. This IAAI course has been approved for 4.0 CEUs through Columbia Southern University.
